Question 1 - Detail
Detail - a small part of a picture or painting. The smaller or less important parts of a picture. It gets the person to focus on something that they may not notice normally.
Jo Whaley
Jo was born in 1953, she has a background in painting and the scenic arts. Within her work she incorporates the work of theatre. Jo has received her B.A., M.A. and M.F.A from the University of California at Berkeley and earned many awards for her work. Her detailed, colourful photography focuses on the natural world and elements.
My Favourite
I really like this photo as it has been made to look like a painting. The way she has cleverly used very natural colours as a background and left the butterfly in colour this has made it stand out more.
I will be using the inspiration of the natural world to incorporate within my work, however I will not be including animals like Jo. There is a small depth of field to show the detail on the butterfly. There is a mixture of blue, red, black, grey and a sand gold colours to give the picture contrast. |
Henry Troup
Henry Troup is a detail photographer from Pennsylvania. From my research I have found out that his work is mostly black and white. I think Henry used this technique because simple things like sand look magnificent in black and white as there shades and outlines are highlighted. Henry Troup has used camera position and a controlled depth of field to explore detail in close-up views of features in the landscape such as sand, water and the surface of rocks.
My Favourite
Henry has used the compositional rule of leading lines which captures the viewers attention. This picture looks as though it has been taken from birds eye view. The editing of black and white enforces the emptiness of the picture.
In my work I will be using sand to recreate different pictures as well as using the black and white edit as I like the effect it gives the picture. |
Plan
I am going to take pictures of the different types of natures such as trees, plants, grass, flowers to see the different types of textures and lines on them. I will use a small depth of field and take the pictures from a worms eye view
In this shoot I have take pictures of trees and the earth around them. These are close up shots and are taken from a worms eye view. I have used a small depth of field as I wanted to capture the detail of the trees and leaves.
Shoot 2
I will be taking close up pictures of shells at different angles trying to capture the detail that each shell has.
I have taken pictures of shells with different textures and lines on them. I have taken close up pictures of multiple shells to show the contrast in colours and detail.I have also captured one shell on its own to focus on the detail of the shapes, colours, the ridges and the texture of the shell.
Shoot 3
In this shoot I have experimented with the different materials and colours. I have also taken close up shots in this shoot.
I have taken close up shots so that most of the detail can be seen like the lines inside the screws and nails.
My editing
I made this picture black and white to relate to the artist Henry Troup and overlapped the pictures like Jo Whaley. This is an experiment and from the viewers point of view it may seem confusing.
Best picture
This is my best picture because you can see all the detail inside the shell
Worse picture
I dont like this shoot that much as it is blurred out and you cant see much detail in it.
Andy Goldsworthy
Andy Goldsworthy is a sculpture photographer and is known for his spiral photography. He makes sculptures out of natural materials and the takes pictures of them. After he leaves them there for people to see. He usually makes them in circle/spiral shapes. He takes pictures of his sculptures on natural things, such as trees, soil, grass.
I really like how he has used a very pale background as this brings out the dark coloured sticks on top. The way he has laid the sticks on top is something I will take into consideration when doing my own shoots. I will also try and recreate the circle with sticks around it. I like the way that he has used a semi circle as the other half of the picture is the reflection from the water. He leaves his sculptures for people to find in natural places such as forests so it becomes a form of insulation as well as photography.
Exam prep
My plan is to recreate swirls like Andy Goldsworthy. I will use a vartiety of locations such as a sand pits, fields, wood and under trees. I have done this so my shoots look like Andy Goldsworthys.
I have tried to copy Andy Goldsworthys work by making spirals however I have decided to recreate them in my own style using sand, stones and other natural materials.
10 hour exam
I have used sticks and a wooden circle to create a withy sculpture. I then taped the sticks to the circle and painted it a redish colour.
My final pieces
Evaluation
I have chosen the question Detail for my exam because I felt as though it would be interesting as well as easy to develop and show my skills behind the camera and Photoshop. I liked this project as I was able to use natural objects (rocks and sticks) to create a variety of pictures, by capturing close ups of the multiple of objects. I was able to develop my ideas by using the photographer research I have done. I have been able to use Photoshop to experiment with which have made my pictures more interesting and eye catching. If I was to redo my exam I would, experiment more with different natural objects and settings, to be able to incorporate more within my final pieces. However overall I am quite happy with how this project has gone.
